06.02.07 - Ports of Lübeck and Szczecin found a joint company
At Polish seaport Szczecin the new terminal-operating company "Cross-Baltic Terminal Operators" (CBT) was founded today. Equal shareholders are Drobnica-Port Szczecin Ltd. and Lübecker Hafen-Gesellschaft mbH (LHG).
The contract was signed in the office building of Port of Szczecin Authority by the Directors of Drobnica-Port Szczecin, Mieczyslaw Bogucki, and Edvard Radziewicz, and Managing Directors of LHG, Mr. Manfred Evers and Mr. Hans-Gerd Gieleßen. Also taking part in the ceremony were Szczecin's city vicepresident, Dariousz Wiczorek, Mayor of Lübeck and Chairman of the supervisory board of LHG, Mr. Michael Bouteiller, Vice-Chairman, Mr. Wolfgang Halbedel, Managing Director of Drobnica's parent company "Szczecin-Swinousjscie Seaport Authority", Mr. Krzysztof Zyndul, and other high-ranked representatives of the port and port authority of Szczecin. Managing Directors of CBT are Mr. Arkadiusz Czyzewski, former Terminal Director of Drobnica-Port Szczecin, and Mr. Heinz Bartel, former Director Marketing and Sales of LHG.
CBT was founded in order to use the know-how of both ports especially regarding paper handling and RoRo-activities and to extend it to the mutual benefit of both partners.
Furtheron, both ports can offer the clients a standardized and optimized package of services using the advantage of the respective hinterland corridors. The new company will also offer functions within the respective logistical chain by including necessary subcontractors like rail, forwarding agencies etc.
The physical handling will be carried out on behalf of CBT by 50% shareholder Drobnica, who has already experience in paper handling. LHG, with its handling rate of 3.2 million tons of forest products biggest European logistic centre for the northeuropean paper industry, will support the Polish side by increasing their know-how in this field.
CBT will not restrict themself to paper handling, but will also offer services in the field of RoRo, LoLo, truck and trailer traffic. Furtheron will also offer clients on-transport of transit and local cargo if desired, again cooperating with relevant subcontractors.
The founding of CBT is the result of the cooperation between Lübeck (total annual turnover 25 million tons) and Szczecin-Swinousjscie (total annual turnover 20 million tons) which started in May 1999 with a "Letter of Intent". While Lübeck with its hinterland connections has decisive advantages especially regarding western and southwestern Europe, Szczecins hinterland corridor includes Berlin as well as eastern and southeastern Europe. As Lübeck and Szczecin complement each other so optimally, a powerful alliance has been established which will improve the market position for both ports.
